Menstrual cramps/PMS

None of these is normal and indicate that a hormonal imbalance is present. As always, the most important question is why? Why isn’t the body regulating the hormones as it is designed to do?

The most common imbalance is the ratio of estrogen to progesterone, with estrogen usually dominating. This is usually because 1) estrogens are not being properly broken down, 2) accumulated toxins act as “estrogen imitators”, and 3) lack of adequate progesterone production. A variety of factors can contribute to these imbalances, such as nutritional deficiencies, stress/anxiety, liver congestion, toxicity, lack of exercise, medications, pelvic misalignment, low thyroid or pituitary function, obesity, hypoglycemia, excess prostaglandin production, and others. To the degree these different areas can be assessed and balanced, improvement and often elimination of symptoms occur.

This is a very different approach from the conventional medical approach that frequently prescribes drugs such as hormone replacement therapy in an attempt to override symptoms. In addition to overlooking underlying causes, this approach often has harmful side effects, as recent research has confirmed as to conventional hormone replacement therapy, which significantly increases risk of cancer and heart disease.

Headaches

Headaches can result from a variety of causes, including spinal and cranial misalignments, food allergies, chemical sensitivities, stress/anxiety, hormonal imbalances, toxicity (various kinds), poor diet, nutritional deficiencies, TMJ, hypertension, sinus congestion, and leaky gut syndrome.

Imbalances in any of the 8 areas of a holistic approach contribute to headaches. Properly balancing these areas gives us great success. Very often, simply correcting structural imbalances, such as tight neck muscles or cranial faults is all that is necessary to eliminate headaches.

Fatigue/Low energy

Fatigue is caused by the cumulative effect of different types of stressors that overcome the body’s ability to effectively deal with them. The adrenal glands, one of our first lines of defense against stress, very commonly become depleted, weak or functionally exhausted. This is a major factor in fatigue.

Any of the 8 areas of a holistic approach, when out of balance, becomes a stressor. As imbalances among these 8 are removed, our ability to resist stress greatly increases, as do energy levels. Very specific nutritional support for the adrenal glands is also required. Our holistic approach usually results in elimination of fatigue in a relatively short amount of time.

Environmental illness

Environmental illness (EI) is defined as multifaceted complaints, both physical and emotional, triggered by a multitude of chemical substances, usually having a cumulative effect. Normally blood tests and standard physical exams show no irregularities and the person is often told that it is simply “all in their mind” due to their extraordinary head-to-toe complaints. Hypersensitivity to the environment increases as the EI person becomes more and more sensitive to “ordinary” items including fluoridated water, cosmetics, perfume, cigarette smoke, and polyester clothing. The person is more susceptible to bacterial and viral infections as well as yeast overgrowth, as smaller doses of the chemical insult triggers increased symptoms.

The list of signs and symptoms of environmental illness is virtually endless, and include almost any symptom one can think of. Our holistic approach is very effective in this area.

Digestive problems

These are frequently caused by the cumulative effect of different “imbalances,” usually a combination of microbes, food allergies, lack of sufficient digestive enzymes, accumulated toxins, intestinal blockages, improper diet, nutritional deficiencies, vital energy depletion, dehydration and reactions to medication.

Regarding microbes, the presence of parasites and yeast/fungus/molds are extremely common and often overlooked in conventional treatment. For more information, see “Microbes” under the section dealing with 8 areas of a holistic approach. Accumulated toxins, especially waste products from the breakdown of foods that remain too long in the intestines, as with constipation, result in irritation and inflammation and are extremely harmful to health.

Also, structural imbalances such as improper functioning of the ileocecal valve or the valve of Houston, often have a negative effect on digestion. Our holistic approach that addresses all of the areas mentioned above usually achieves very positive results.

Asthma

Asthma is a respiratory condition in which the bronchial tubes spasm and excessive mucous is secreted into the lungs, inhibiting breathing and creating a variety of symptoms. “Extrinsic” asthma is an allergy-induced reaction in which serum IgE’s antibodies increase. “Intrinsic” asthma is a bronchial reaction triggered by stress, cold, exercise, environmental pollutants, or an infection.

There are anywhere from 15-20 possible causes for asthma and usually a number of them are present concurrently. Some of the most common and important are 1) allergies (including molds, dust, pollen and animal dander), 2) environmental pollutants and chemicals, 3) food allergies (a major culprit in childhood asthma), 4) lowered adrenal function, 5) emotional stress, 6) medications, and 7) nutritional deficiencies. We have considerable experience and expertise in identifying and correcting imbalances in all of these areas.

Allergies

We utilize the latest research showing allergies to be a “disharmonization” within the bodymind complex. We can pinpoint the specific offenders, whether it is food, chemicals, pollen, dust, dander, mold, etc. and “desensitize” the body so it no longer reacts to them. This often results in complete elimination of the allergy. This is an area where we have much success.

Conventional treatment of allergies is most commonly directed to block the immune response. While this approach can provide symptomatic relief, it does nothing to address the underlying causes of the problem. Patients often become dependent on their medications, they suffer from numerous side effects, and most importantly, they worsen their overall health by constantly suppressing their immune system.

Toxins

There are two primary types of toxins: endotoxins and environmental (exotoxins). Endotoxins are those waste products from the digestion of food that as a result of impaired digestion accumulate in our bodies. Another category is the toxins given off by the overgrowth of unfriendly microbes. Both comprise some extremely toxic substances that have severe health consequences.

Environmental toxins, especially chemicals and heavy metals are equally if not more pernicious. Their negative effects on health are one of the most overlooked and misunderstood areas. Another environmental toxin, although it is usually not viewed this way, is the overexposure to electronics. We utilize very advanced, leading edge methods of eliminating these noxious toxins, especially with a line of liquid bath products that eliminates through the skin.

Often very specific nutritional supplements designed to clean out our body’s detoxification pathways are needed, as well as adjunctive therapies such as mineral infrared and cold laser therapies, which dislodges toxins from their storage sites so they can be properly eliminated.

Structural Imbalances

Structure refers to the musculoskeletal system, which consists of muscles, fascia, bones, tendons, ligaments, cartilage and connective tissue. The central cause of problems here lie in the muscles, which develop “adhesions” and become tight, twisted, knotted-up, restricted and painful. This results in neck and back pain, as well as pain in joints such as the shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, knee and ankle. This also contributes to many forms of arthritis.

In my experience, most practitioners do not deal deeply enough with the underlying muscle imbalances and adhesions. We utilize very advanced soft-tissue techniques such as Active Release Technique, Graston Technique, Applied Kinesiology and chiropractic as well as state-of-the-art modalities such as mineral infrared, cold laser and low frequency ultrasound therapies. This combination enables us to correct these conditions relatively quickly.

Nutritional Deficiencies

Proper nutrition, both as to diet and nutritional supplements, is vital to good health and is more complicated than it is often made out to be, for a number of reasons including:

* Individual nutritional requirements vary greatly from one person to another.
* It is far more effective to pinpoint one’s exact individual needs, rather than guessing based on something you read or taking a “shotgun approach” in the hope that some combination will work.
* Modern life in New York, which is loaded with high levels of stress, toxins, and microbes, often require very specific nutritional supplements which most people are lacking. Even if a person “eats well”, most still must supplement their diet with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, etc.
* Many of the products on the market today are of inferior quality. Nutrition is “big business” today and there is a great deal of hype, misinformation and an over-emphasis on profit over quality.

In addition to being a Certified Nutritionist/Dietician, I utilize kinesiological testing which if used properly is a brilliant tool for assessing an individual’s specific nutritional needs. Also, the supplements we use are of the highest and purest quality. It is not what you take, but what you utilize that counts.

Nervous System Interference

This is probably the most overlooked area of healthcare. The nervous system is the master control system, which controls all functions that take place in the body, down to the smallest cell. The brain can be seen as a computer with thousands of “programs” which regulate all functions. When these programs develop problems (like glitches or bugs in your computer program), they no longer regulate as they are designed to do and health problems result.

We utilize advanced, cutting edge techniques such as Applied Kinesiology, BodyTalk, and Total Body Modification to reset these nervous system programs. This makes a tremendous difference in enabling us to get to the root of your problems.

Microbes

There has been a huge increase in the prevalence of microbes in today’s world, which can have devastating effects on health. There are 5 main categories of microbes: virus, bacteria, parasites, molds, and yeast/candida. The last three, in my experience, are largely overlooked and/or not treated properly by the vast majority of health care professionals. (For our approach to viruses and bacteria, select “recurrent colds/infections” under “Conditions we Treat.”

Yeast overgrowth is extremely common today. The major reasons for this is over-consumption of refined carbohydrates, especially sugar along with stress, antibiotic use, birth control pills. They contribute to a wide variety of symptoms such as fatigue, depression, sinus and allergy problems, gas/bloating and weight gain.

Our exposure to parasites has greatly increased over the past decade; many feel it has reached epidemic proportions. Parasites refer to the wide variety of microorganisms that exist in a parasitic relationship with the body and cause health problems especially digestive, sinus and skin problems. Molds, which are everywhere, have similar consequences to yeast/candida. We have developed considerable expertise over the past 16 years in detecting and correcting problems in these areas.

Hormonal Imbalances

A major area of concern today, especially for women who experience a wide-variety of hormone-related problems including menstrual cramps, PMS, infertility, menopausal symptoms, osteoporosis, and an alarming rise in hormone-related cancers, especially breast cancer.

The conventional medical approach has failed to find truly safe and effective solutions to these problems. For example, Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) prescribed for millions of women has been shown conclusively to dangerously increase a woman’s risk of cancer, heart disease and stroke, while having little positive benefit.

A holistic approach is critical here because hormones cannot be isolated myopically from the rest of the bodymind complex. As the other seven areas of our holistic approach are brought into balance, this has positive effects on hormonal balance. Also, certain very specific natural supplements can make a considerable difference. While there are still cases where conventional HRT is appropriate, many women benefit greatly from our natural approach.

Energy Depletions

This is the most important area in achieving and maintaining optimal health. Hippocrates said “The natural healing force within each one of us is the greatest force in getting well”. What is most important is that one has enough of it, otherwise the bodymind will simply not function properly and any other efforts one makes to improve health will be limited.

This is the most common depletion we find and also the most overlooked. So many New Yorkers, due to the cumulative effects of different types of stressors are seriously deficient in this basic vital energy. We have extremely effective methods for increasing this basic energy, which can usually be accomplished rather quickly.

Emotional And Mental Stress

Many people are aware that mental & emotional stress can have a negative impact upon health. Most are not aware, however, that there is much that can be done to increase one’s ability to handle stress and to reduce it’s negative effects.

In general, the more the bodymind complex is in balance, the more effectively one is able to deal with mental and emotional stress in a positive way and prevent it from spilling over into the body. Advanced techniques such as BodyTalk, NeuroEmotional Technique, and Total Body Modification are extremely accurate at being able to pinpoint specific issues or emotions that are having a negative effect and in many cases lessen this impact. This results in major health benefits. This process is not easy to describe and is best experienced for oneself.
